eVoting - A More Accurate Election Outcome?

August 20, 2020

As election season ramps up many questions remain unanswered around how polling will work given the current and post-COVID climate.

The pandemic will have a big impact on electoral turnout, with new research from Okta suggesting 14 million votes could be lost as a result of making verifying your identity too difficult.

This isn’t helped by the fact that some have continued to push a narrative that mail-in ballots are susceptible to fraud. Forcing people to choose between health and their civic duty is not an acceptable approach. What if there was an easier, more secure way?

In this roundtable, Husayn Kassai (CEO and co-founder at Onfido), Frederic Kerrest (COO and co-founder at Okta), Jeremy Grant (President of the Better Identity Coalition) and Leonardo Gammar (CEO at Agora) debate the following questions:

  • What is the impact of not giving citizens the right to vote by mail/electronically on the upcoming election?

  • Is registering to vote just too complicated?

  • How does electronic voting work and would it dovetail with the many disparate voting systems already deployed?

  • With the worry around electoral fraud for mail-in ballots, would an eVoting system be safer?

  • What can we learn from other countries that have successfully carried out e-elections?

  • What can be done to persuade the current administration to consider more strongly the use of technology in the next election?
